How Does Ketosis Work in Your Body?

By Devanshu (Dev)

How does keto diet work? For years we were led to believe that carbohydrates were bad for us and that the only thing that could provide us with energy was carbohydrates. Now that we know that there are healthy fats as well as carbohydrates, it is a different story. We can eat carbohydrates and reap the benefits, it is just the right time and the right amount that matter.
How Does Ketosis Work in Your Body

How does keto diet work? The basic principle of this diet is that the dieter should eat more fat than carbohydrate, which will cause you to lose weight while at the same time providing your body with all the essential nutrients required by your organs and your cells for a healthy functioning. There is no magic formula for weight loss and maintaining healthy; you just need to keep yourself motivated and guided by the right information and diet recipes. If you follow this diet correctly, you will see that it will not only help you lose weight but will also reduce the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, cancer and stroke.

How does keto work? Ketones are produced by your liver when you consume carbohydrates, they are the building blocks of your fat cells. When the body cannot produce enough ketones, it uses stored fat as an energy source. Therefore, if you are trying to lose weight you may want to consider decreasing the amount of carbohydrates that you consume as ketones are a much better source of energy than carbohydrates.

Why do we need fat when we are talking about fat burning? It is because ketogenic diets eliminate all the carbohydrates that are broken down to glucose, and glucose is the main source of energy for the body. The problem occurs when the body cannot produce enough ketones. When the levels of ketones in the blood become too low, ketones will be used as an energy source and this will deplete the glycogen reserves of the brain and the liver. This will eventually impair their ability to process insulin and to absorb glucose from the bloodstream into the muscles.

A keto diet has been shown to improve the control of blood glucose and to increase the metabolism. It is recommended by doctors to use short-term diets with very low carbohydrates for anyone suffering from diabetes, or who has heart disease, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure or other health problems that affect the control of blood glucose. This is because a low-carb, high-fat diet can worsen these conditions and may cause or worsen the symptoms.

People suffering from epilepsy can also use a keto diet for short-term use. The ketones created by the liver can reduce seizure attacks and improve the chances of a person to regain motor function. However, it must be stressed that epileptic patients should always talk to their doctor before beginning a keto diet. Discuss your medical history with your doctor and ask about the possible benefits and risks involved in starting a keto diet, especially if you are suffering from epilepsy or another serious medical condition like heart disease, and ask how does keto diet work for you.
